WELCOME

Santiago de Compostela (Spain), 3-4th April, 2009

Familial lipodystrophies are a group of rare diseases which are characterized by a loss of adipose tissue. Despite its low prevalence since 2000 an important number of papers have spread light upon its ethiopathogeny and pathophysiology. So, both clinicians and basic researchers have put together their efforts in order to get a better understanding of these diseases.
Probably, the majority of familial lipodystrophies are due to nuclear malfuntion. A deep knowledge of nuclear organization and function of several nuclear proteins, including its relationships with other molecules, will be able to advance in the comprehension of these diseases; particularly the reason why adipose tissue is selectively affected in most of them, and questions related with its relationships with aging and with some prevalent diseases as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and hyperlipidaemia.
In this meeting in Santiago de Compostela some of the most prestigious European Scientists in this field will come together in what will be an excellent frame for debating relevant questions related with both clinical and molecular basis of Familial Lipodystrophies.
